GA 36

State Route 36 (SR 36) is a state highway that runs southwest-to-northeast through portions of Harris, Talbot, Upson, Butts, Lamar, and Newton counties in central Georgia. The route runs from its southwestern terminus at SR 208 just east of Waverly Hall to its northeastern terminus at US 278, SR 12, and SR 142 in Covington.

From its southern terminus at SR 208 in Waverly Hall, just inside Harris County, the route travels northeast into Talbot County to SR 41. The two routes run concurrent north to Woodland. In Woodland, SR 36 departs and continues northeast through Upson County, and its county seat, Thomaston, before entering Lamar County. In Lamar County, SR 36 becomes concurrent with US 41/SR 7, and SR 18. State Routes 7/36 continue north, concurrent with US 41 for a short distance, before SR 36 departs and continues to the northeast. Shortly after entering Butts County, the route has an interchange with I-75. After arriving in Jackson, the county seat of Butts County, the route continues north, crossing into Newton County. The route meets its northern terminus at US 278/SR 12/SR 142 in Covington.

SR 36 is a somewhat significant route in the area, with an Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT) of over 5,000 vehicles for much of the route between Barnesville and Covington. Traffic is significantly less on the section of the route south of Thomaston. There are future plans of widening SR 36 into 4 lanes from Jackson to Thomaston.

The route met its former northern terminus at SR 81 in Covington, the county seat of Newton County, until July 16, 2012. Then, the signage on the road leading to the square was removed, and the eastern Covington Bypass (County Road 653) was designated as Highway 36. Its terminus now is at its junction with US 278/SR 12/SR 142, near the eastern Covington city limits.
