I 985 (GA northbound)
Georgia State Routes Former
Interstate 985 (I-985) is a 24.04-mile (38.69 km) long auxiliary Interstate Highway in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. It begins at I-85 (which is also the southern end of SR 365) near Suwanee and continues northward to the city of Gainesville. I-985 is also known as the Sidney Lanier Parkway and is also designated as unsigned State Route 419.
I-985 and SR 365 form a concurrency — both routes end at the interchange with I-85 near Suwanee — but only the I-985 signs are displayed. I-985 is also concurrent with US 23 from exit 4 northward; US 23 was moved onto the Interstate once it was completed.
I-985 is the highest-numbered spur route of a north-south Interstate, and is second only to I-990, which serves the Buffalo metropolitan area.
I-985 heads northeast from the southern terminus at I–85, towards Gainesville. This is also the southern terminus of SR 365. Southeast of Gainesville I–985 has an interchange with US 129/SR 11. Then, I–985 has an interchange with SR 369. This interchange is also the northern terminus of I–985. Here, SR 365 continues northeast, toward Cornelia.[citation needed]
The speed limit is 70 miles per hour (110 km/h) except north of exit 22 where the speed limit drops to 65 miles per hour (105 km/h). After exit 24, I-985 ends, and the freeway becomes a four-lane highway with at-grade intersections.
The highway was built in the mid 1960s as SR 365; it was designated as I-985 in 1985.[citation needed]
